The DIY Dad novices guide Series: DIY Driveway Lights on Posts: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you're tired of navigating a dark driveway at night, installing lights on posts can be a great solution. Not only do they add a stylish touch to your property, but they also provide safety and security. With this step-by-step guide, you can easily install driveway lights on posts and enjoy a well-lit driveway in no time.
1. Gathering Materials and Tools
Before you begin installing your driveway lights on posts, it's important to gather all the necessary materials and tools. You'll need posts, lights, concrete mix, a post hole digger, a level, a drill, screws, and a saw. Make sure to measure the distance between each post and the height you want them to be installed at before purchasing materials. Once you have everything you need, you can begin the installation process.
2. Plan your Post Placement and Wiring
Before you start digging holes for your posts, it's important to plan out where you want them to be placed and how you want to wire them. Consider the layout of your driveway and where you want the lights to shine. You'll also need to decide if you want to wire the lights to a switch or a timer. Once you have a plan in place, you can start digging the holes and installing the posts.
3. Dig Post Holes and Set Posts
The first step in installing driveway lights on posts is to dig the post holes and set the posts. Use a post hole digger to dig holes that are at least 2 feet deep and 6 inches wide. Make sure the holes are evenly spaced and level with each other. Then, place the posts in the holes and fill them with concrete. Use a level to make sure the posts are straight and let the concrete dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
4. Install Wiring and Lights

Use a level to make sure the posts are straight and let the concrete dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
5. Test and Adjust Lights as Needed.
After installing the lights on your driveway posts, it’s important to test them and make any necessary adjustments. Turn on the lights and walk around your driveway to ensure that they are providing adequate lighting. If you notice any dark spots, adjust the angle of the lights or add additional lights to fill in the gaps. It’s also a good idea to set up a timer or motion sensor to control when the lights turn on and off, saving energy and ensuring that your driveway is always well-lit.

I bought four Harte light bollards, one wall mounted light and a street light type in 2008 or thereabouts. Fantastic products, sturdy, durable, weather proof and decorative. Follow up service was excellent when one was damaged about 5 years later. They will last forever.

I purchased 4 of the Harte 6 Traditional Range of lighting for my garden in Wicklow and I like the strength and sturdiness of them especially in our climate. I would recommend this range to others and I intend purchasing more in the near future.
